Henderson Secondary School began in 1974 on Friendly Hill at Preston Road is headed by Mr Gan Kee Soon.
The school gradually shifted to the current address in 1976 due to the increase in the number of enrolled students. In 1981, the school badge was changed to be in the shape of a shield. In the centre of the shield, there is a book which signifies knowledge and a flame which Hendersonians strive to keep ablaze and an upright figure which signify the youth of life.
In the year 1994, the school shifted to a temporary holding campus in Queensway to make way for the rebuilding of the campus in Henderson Road. Three years later, the school held a homecoming event where all the students and the principal took a walk from the temporary school back to the new campus.
Henderson has been led by the following people: Mr Gan Kee Soon (From 1974 to June 1979), Mr TP Naidu (from 1979 to December 1981), Mdm Lau Kam How (from December 1981 to November 1988), Mr N Subramaniam (from Nov 1988 to Nov 1996), Mrs Ho Woon Ho (from December 1996 to December 2000) and Mrs Yeo Chin Nam(from December 2000 to today(2008)) now the new principal is Mr Simen Lourds (2009-)[1]
The school's staff and students started an experiment in 2006 in partnership with four Singaporean branches of NEC. An eco-garden[2] has been constructed which is using Citronella oil bearing herbs and plants. The students will be extracting the oil which is an active ingredient of insect repellents. The objective is to give the students a critical awareness of the environment and to employ their problem solving abilities. Henderson school was chosen because it is located in a dengue fever prone neighbourhood.[2]
The school was host to twenty visiting students from Pengiran Jaya Negara Pengiran Haji Abdulud Bakar Secondary School in Brunei.[3] 2007 was the first time that this cultural trip had taken place with secondary students. People from this school are lucky to travel.
Education For Life [4]
When we hear the name of Henderson
We glow all over with pride
When we sing the song of Henderson
Our hearts and minds rejoice
Now to Henderson we raise this song
In tribute and in praise
For we hear your living spirit calling
To excel in every way
Education for life we receive
Prepare us for life ahead
And to serve our republic
You teach us to be courteous, courageous, loyal
Sound in body and mind
Henderson is like a flaming torch
We'll keep it brightly ablaze
So your wisdom and philosophy
Will spread all over the place
The first school badge was shaped with letters EFL in the center - an abbreviation of the motto (Education for Life).
The current school badge is in the shape of a shield. Within the shield, there is an open book which signifies knowledge; a flame, which Hendersonians aspire to keep ablaze; and an upright figure that represents Youth and Life.[5] Below the shield is the school motto:
The colours of the school are Red and Blue where red signifies loyalty and fortitude and blue signifies moral and intellectual strength [5]
The following are the school achievements for the past years
The school successfully launched "MatchBox", their own art exhibit. The student's pieces of art were selected for display at the entrance of the esplanade.[6]
